The photo just acquired courtesy of The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania that is posted on the Monument page shows Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II with the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Phillip and the Tasmanian Governor The Right Hon. Sir Ronald Cross, Bt, KCMG, KCVO at the unveiling on 20 February 1954 of the Hunter Street monument that records our first settlers.

We are curious to know the name of the unidentified Navy vessel, so can you help?.  From the information we know, it is not the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne as that first visited Hobart in 1955. It could be HMAS Sydney as she had returned to Sydney in January 1954 after seeing service in the waters off Korea before arriving in Fremantle on 2 June 1954.

An HTFS Member has advised that the aircraft carrier in the picture is HMAS Vengeance which escorted the ship Gothic while on the Queen's tour of Australia between February and April 1954.
